During the 1980s, CPRW was faced with many planning applications for caravan parks and holiday villages in areas of natural beauty and rare wildlife. One such plan included an attempt by Carmarthenshire County Council to turn precious wetlands in Llanelli – home to many rare species of birds – into a holiday village island.
Together with our local members, CPRW co-ordinated with local residents, the Countryside Commission, RSPB and Nature Conservancy to fight this appalling planning application. After a protracted battle, the council backed down and the wetlands were saved.
Today Llanelli Wetlands are an internationally-renowned site of special interest for migratory wading birds and wetland wildlife.
