A national charity branch which is dedicated to protecting the unique landscapes of Wales and championing the rural way of life, has announced the 2024 Rural Wales Award winner.
CPRW Clwyd presented the Rural Wales Award to Pentrefelin Farm, the Denbigh-based organic dairy farm, for their regenerative approach to dairy farming.
The Rural Wales Awards has been running for over 30 years and shines a spotlight on businesses who are making a difference in the community and leading the way on environmental and conservation approaches.
Bob Gaffey, CPRW Clwyd Branch Chairman, said “We’ve awarded Pentrefelin Farm for their regenerative approach to dairy farming, with 100% pasture fed cows and calves kept to their mothers. Hay cut for winter feed, planting with diverse grasses, fruit trees planted for shelter of animals and for harvesting, solar panels, rainwater collection feeding troughs, ducks and chickens also benefiting the soil, sales of meat and milk. Whole farm ecosystem for nature and wildlife.”
The branch presented the award at to Huw Foulkes, owner and farmer of Pentrefelin farm earlier this month with the Clwyd Branch committee members present.
Huw Foulkes, Pentrefelin Farm, said: “Extremely grateful to CPRW for awarding us at Pentrefelin with the Rural Wales award for the care of the local environment! When I set up the micro dairy in 2021 I wanted to show people that it was possible produce food and care for the environment at the same time, and didn’t have to choose one or the other. It’s a great feeling that people are coming here and seeing how important a role our cows play in achieving this, and that actually caring for the environment whilst managing cows in the correct way go together really well. ”
Jonty Colchester, Chair of CPRW, said “We are delighted with Clwyd’s winner this year. Pentrefelin is a small family farm showing the way for a positive and different approach to all. Lower inputs may mean lower outputs but we have seen time and again that this can be a net gain for the farmers as well as their land. We are proud to present the 2024 Rural Wales Award to Pentrefelin and wish them the very best of luck for the future.”
CPRW was founded in 1928, making it the oldest rural charity in Wales. The charity is passionate about creating a countryside which works for everyone, protecting wild spaces for the next generation and engendering a sustainable rural community for all. To find out more, please visit cprw.org.uk.
