Kenfig National Nature Reserve Honoured With 2025 CPRW Rural Wales Award

The Glamorgan and Valleys Branch of CPRW, the Welsh Countryside Charity, is delighted to announce that the 2025 Rural Wales Award has been presented to Kenfig National Nature Reserve, in recognition of its outstanding commitment to environmental conservation, heritage, and community engagement.

The award ceremony took place on Saturday 8th September at the reserve, where members of the CPRW Glamorgan and Valleys Branch presented a specially commissioned slate plaque from Blaenau Ffestiniog to representatives of the Kenfig NNR partnership.

Kenfig NNR, a 1,336-acre Site of Special Scientific Interest near Bridgend, is one of Wales’s most important coastal dune systems. It has been recognised for its exemplary habitat management, long-term biodiversity strategy, and inclusive public engagement. The site is owned and manged by Kenfig Corporation Trust with help from Natural Resources Wales (NRW), and a dedicated network of volunteers.

The judging panel commended Kenfig’s integrated conservation efforts—from low-impact grazing and invasive species control to community-led wellbeing walks, education programmes, and cultural initiatives such as sculpture trails and folklore projects.

Speaking at the event, Chris Kenfig Reserve Warden said:

“We are honoured to receive the 2025 CPRW Rural Wales Award. Kenfig is a very special place where wildlife, heritage, and community come together, and this recognition means a great deal to everyone involved. The award is a tribute not only to the reserve’s unique habitats but also to the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and local partners who care for it. We’re proud to share Kenfig with so many people and to play our part in protecting it for future generations.”

Kim Allen, CPRW Glamorgan and Valley’s Branch Chair, said:

“Kenfig embodies the spirit of the Rural Wales Awards—demonstrating how conservation, culture, and community can thrive together. It is a model of resilience and a truly deserving winner.”
