CPRW Anglesey Branch Honours Hooton’s Homegrown With 2025 Rural Wales Award
The Anglesey Branch of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales (CPRW) is delighted to announce that the 2025 Rural Wales Award has been presented to Hooton’s Homegrown in recognition of its contribution to the rural life, landscape, and environment of Anglesey.
The award was officially presented at a ceremony held on 1st September 2025 at the Hooton’s Homegrown farm shop in Brynsiencyn. Members of the CPRW Anglesey Branch Committee attended the celebration, where Dr Jonathan Dean, Branch Chairman, presented a specially-commissioned slate plaque from Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales to Michael Hooton, owner of the family-run business.
Hooton’s Homegrown, a family-run farm shop and horticulture enterprise near Brynsiencyn, stood out to the judging panel for its long-standing commitment to local produce and community engagement. The business has consistently demonstrated responsible land stewardship through the use of extensive planting of trees and hedgerows and habitat protection. The farm’s strong connection with the community and dedication to education also aligned closely with CPRW’s award criteria.
Dr Jonathan Dean, CPRW Anglesey Branch Chairman, said: “Hooton’s Homegrown is a great example of a rural business rooted in the community. As the longest-established enterprise of its kind on Anglesey, Hooton’s has evolved over the past half-century from a potato and cereals farm into a multi-faceted business with homegrown Welsh local produce at the heart of everything they do.”
Hooton’s was particularly commended for its support for Welsh produce, and public-facing nature—offering farm tours, educational visits, and community events that help connect people to the land and food they eat. Hedgerows have been maintained and enhanced, further enriching the Anglesey landscape.
Accepting the award, Michael Hooton, owner of Hooton’s Homegrown, said: “It is an honour to receive this award today. This award acknowledges the effort that we have been making over the last fifty years.
Planting shelterbelts, allowing hedges to grow to their natural height and leaving field margins to grow naturally has enabled us to farm alongside nature, which brings huge benefits to both.
Hooton’s Homegrown supports many Welsh businesses and offers the public a true Welsh shopping experience.
We welcome the public to pick their own fresh fruit and vegetables and to enjoy the environment that we have created. They can see how food is produced at field level, learning as they pick.”
The CPRW Rural Wales Awards honour individuals, groups, and projects that have made outstanding contributions to enhancing the countryside and rural life in Wales. They aim to highlight examples of good practice in environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and community engagement.
