CPRW Responds to Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru’s Wind Farm Announcements

The Welsh Countryside Charity, CPRW, Wales’ leading countryside charity, has responded to today’s announcement from Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru outlining proposals for three major new wind farms across Wales.

While CPRW welcomes the principle of public ownership and investment in renewable energy, the charity has urged caution to ensure that the scale and siting of these developments do not undermine the landscapes, biodiversity, and rural communities that make Wales unique.

Dr Jonathan Dean, Trustee of CPRW, said: “We fully support the transition to renewable energy and the goal of retaining profits for the benefit of Welsh communities. However, we remain disappointed that Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru have not chosen to pursue a more effective and publicly acceptable approach OFFSHORE.”

Jonty Colchester, Chairman of CPRW, added: “Publicly owned renewable energy projects must set the gold standard for sustainable development. This means not only clean energy generation but also protection of Wales’ treasured natural and cultural landscapes. CPRW looks forward to engaging with Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru to ensure these projects deliver real benefits for Wales without sacrificing the countryside and ecosystems we all depend upon.”

CPRW stresses that meeting climate targets must go hand-in-hand with protecting the landscapes and biodiversity that define Wales’ identity and support its rural economy. The charity calls for transparent decision-making and site-specific studies to assess potential impacts, and for communities to be meaningfully involved in shaping the future of renewable energy development.
